The Word- John 1:1-5 by Rene Milner

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. “ John 1:1-5

Jesus is the Word. When we read the Word we are taking Jesus into our very being. Suddenly Jesus in my heart and hiding the Word in my heart are all one in the same. The Word is near you. He is a light to your feet and a lamp onto your path. He is written down that you may believe (accept) and that believing you may have life in His name. Often as our Christian life lengthens we read things in the Bible and it is so well known and the words so well believed that we forget to really think about it.

Think about it.

In the beginning was the WORD. The very words we hold in our hands where there at the beginning of Creation. In fact they were the tool that crafted all creation. “All things were made through Him.” This Word is powerful enough to form heaven and earth, yet sharp and precise enough to separate bone and marrow, soul and spirit, and even the thoughts and intentions of the heart. I have trouble telling what my own honest intentions are some days. Am I truly doing something from the heart or do I have a self-intended motive. The Word has no problem separating this. If I believe this I need only to turn to Him who is the Word and the discernment will be illuminated. This light of the world is the light that shines in the darkness, giving us the ability to see what life truly is. We can separate life from non-life and seeing life in this Light we can have life to the full. I can’t overstate how mind-blowing this is for me. It should be for all of us. It is not Jesus and His words, Jesus is The Word. I am not saying He was any less real man and fully God. I am saying it is one. Do we look at Jesus as a Historical man gone away now to heaven. He is here. He is as close as your ability to recite scripture or read a passage. Do we sometimes think of Him in stories of long ago? He is as present now as your ability to meditate on Him and apply that to your own ongoing present story.  Does he seem far off and impersonal? He is deeply personal. As personal as your bones and marrow. Do you let the Word discern the thoughts and intentions of your heart?

Why do we not live like Christ is the very Words inside our head? Darkness. Our ability to draw close, to get personal and to live that life rests in our decision to allow the Light to shine in the darkness. To shine on every thought and motivation of our hearts and minds. Our ability to grab hold of those darkness seeking critters and hold them captive. And in taking them captive to make them obedient to the very Word that is Christ. The darkness cannot overcome the light, but we can. We can refuse to open the shutters and let the light in. The light is all around us we need only to open our eye and our ears to see and hear the Word, but more importantly we need to believe that it is the light and open the shutters of our hearts and let it shine on every thought, every feeling, and every action.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.Col 3:16-17
