The Fragrance of Christ – Pastor/Elder Zack Fugate

“But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life. Who is sufficient for these things?”-2 Corinthians 2:14-17

Day in and day out we are called to the Great Commission. As followers of Christ, we either smell of death to our old selves to those that are void of Christ and seedless, or we smell of the life we have gained through Christ’s death on the cross to those who have heard and responded to his call. In practicality, our lives ought to reflect Christ’s work in us, despite the happenings of the world around us.

At my father’s funeral, it was so evident to witness the impact of Christ in his life by the audience sitting in the pews during his services. Specifically, the audience consisted of those that knew my father before he gave his life to Christ, and those that knew him once he had crossed over from death to life. As stories were shared, loved ones, friends, and family members were exposed to the very circumcision that had taken place in my father’s heart as a result of his relationship with Christ. The stark truths of these verses from Corinthians lay heavy in the room as if the very air thickened with the fragrance of Christ.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, what fragrance are we sharing with those around us? Are we finding ourselves at the base of the cross…worshiping our savior, washing in the Word, and seeking to work out our salvation? Or, are we stuck, focused on our old selves wallowing in the false promises and pleasures of the flesh? Make no mistake, we are called to “spread the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere…” Here is the kicker, it is not something we can do ourselves, but must be a product of the deep workings, grace, and love that abound in us through Christ and Christ alone.

“For we are not, like so many, peddlers of God’s word, but as men of sincerity, as commissioned by God, in the sight of God we speak of Christ.”-2 Corinthians 2:17

We are not salesmen. We are not simply trying to offer a product of hope. Rather, by the grace of Christ, our lives should point others to Him, that they might also cross over from death to life as a result of their salvation in Christ!

Your brother in Christ, Zack Fugate
